From NPR: “The Final Chapter For A Trusty Bookmobile?” by Charlotte Albright. It’s kind of sad to me to hear about the end of a bookmobile, because it was a way to bring libraries to communities that don’t have such access.
In Brooklyn, the Brooklyn Public Library still has Bookmobiles to show up at public events (such as the Brooklyn Literary Festival), in addition to the Biblobus, which goes brings Spanish media to Spanish-speaking communities in Brooklyn. In an age of tough economics, I hope we don’t give up.
When I first started working for the Public Library in 2007 there were numerous things that came up over the course of my day-to-day work that were just never discussed in library school. If they were, they were not in the classes that I took. But let me tell you, if there was a “getting real” class, it should have been mandatory. So, here’s a quick list of things that I was totally unprepared for:

Here’s what I think about now: No one ever told me no. Not Mom, not the prim librarians stamping return dates onto slip after slip. No one ever said: This book is outside your age range; this book is too complicated.
Q: “It’s the end of the term. My paper is due tomorrow. (Today, technically. How is it already 2:00am?). I’ve subsisted on nothing but coffee and my own tears for the past three days. The only thing that will keep me from suffering yet another meltdown is an article on JSTOR to which I don’t have access. Can nothing be done!?”
